As I move through my 40s — both as a woman and as a homeopath — I’ve found myself paying closer attention to the inner workings of my body. Hormonal shifts can be subtle or seismic at this stage of life, and while we often hear about oestrogen and progesterone, there’s a whole symphony of systems working behind the scenes to keep us balanced.
One of the most important players? The liver. But here’s the thing — it’s not just about the liver. It’s about how everything is connected.
Your Hormones Don’t Work in Isolation
When we talk about hormone health, we need to zoom out. Your liver, gut, adrenals, thyroid, and even your emotional health all play interconnected roles. You can think of your body like a wheel — the liver is one cog, but it can’t turn smoothly without the others moving in rhythm too.
That’s why I’m taking a whole-body approach in my 40s. And for me, that starts with nourishing the systems that support hormonal balance — one of which is most definitely the liver.
Why the Liver Matters (And It’s Not Just About Alcohol)
The liver often gets reduced to a detox organ — something we associate mostly with alcohol. But the truth is, it plays a huge role in regulating hormones, particularly oestrogen. If your liver is under pressure, it can’t efficiently process and eliminate excess hormones, which can lead to symptoms like PMS, fatigue, mood swings, headaches, and skin flare-ups.
And it’s not just alcohol that impacts liver health. We’re also dealing with:
- Medications
- Processed foods
- Pesticides and environmental toxins
- Chemicals in skincare and household products
All of these put added strain on our liver — sometimes without us even realising.
Emotions Live in the Liver, Too
Here’s something I love from Chinese medicine: the liver is associated with the emotion of anger.
When we hold onto unprocessed anger, frustration, or resentment — especially over long periods of time — it can stagnate energetically in the liver and eventually show up physically. Think irritability, tension, digestive issues, or hormonal imbalances that don’t seem to shift.
It’s a reminder that emotional wellbeing is just as important as the physical.
Where Homeopathy Comes In
This is where I believe homeopathy really shines.
Unlike many conventional approaches or even supplements — which might help with physical detox — homeopathy addresses both the physical and emotional layers of imbalance.
The remedies I use in practice can support the liver in processing toxins like medication, synthetic hormones, or environmental stressors — but they can also help shift long-held emotions, gently and powerfully.
A Simple Tip for Liver Support
Want to give your liver a little love this week?
Try starting your day with this warm tonic:
- Juice of half a lemon
- A dash of ground turmeric
- A pinch of cayenne pepper
- Warm water
You could also try sipping on dandelion root tea, known for its gentle liver-supporting properties.
The Bigger Picture
Supporting your liver is a powerful step toward hormone harmony — but it’s part of a bigger picture. Over the coming months, I’ll be sharing more about the other systems I’m prioritising in my 40s, including the adrenals, the gut, and emotional resilience.
Homeopathy gives us a unique lens to see the whole person, not just the symptoms. And that’s what I love most about it.
If you’re feeling out of sync and want to explore a more holistic approach to your health, I’d love to hear from you.
